What is EQ (Equalization)?

EQ, or Equalization, is the process of adjusting the volume of specific frequencies within a recording to improve the tone, clarity, and balance of the voice.

Why EQ (Equalization) Matters for Podcasters

Equalization (EQ) allows an editor to shape the tone of a voice. The human voice occupies specific frequency ranges. A 'High Pass Filter' (or Low Cut) is the most common EQ move in podcasting; it cuts out deep, rumbly frequencies (below 80-100Hz) that aren't part of the voice but contribute to muddiness. Boosting the 'presence' frequencies (around 3kHz-5kHz) can make a voice sound more intelligible and articulate. Cutting 'muddy' frequencies (around 300Hz-500Hz) can clear up a recording that sounds like it was made in a box. EQ is used to make different voices sound like they belong in the same room and to remove annoying frequencies.
