What is Room Tone?

Room tone is the sound of 'silence' in a specific recording environment. It is recorded separately to help editors patch gaps and smooth out edits.

Why Room Tone Matters for Podcasters

True silence doesn't exist. Every room has a unique 'hum' or 'air' sound. When an editor cuts out a sentence, leaving a gap of absolute digital silence (0 volume), it sounds unnatural and jarring—like the speakers turned off. To fix this, recordists capture 30 seconds of 'Room Tone' (everyone sitting silently) at the end of a session. The editor uses this clip to fill in the gaps where audio was removed, creating a seamless, continuous background atmosphere. It is the 'spackle' of audio editing.
