Podcast sponsorship download benchmarks and CPM math
How to present downloads, CPM assumptions, sell-through, and sponsor scenarios without overstating likely revenue.
Reviewed and updated July 28, 2026
Short answer
Use a consistent download window, disclose the measurement source, calculate revenue from explicit CPM and sell-through assumptions, and sell audience relevance rather than implying a universal benchmark.
Define the download number
A sponsor cannot interpret ‘downloads’ without a time window and measurement method. Use a consistent per-episode window and first-party hosting analytics.
- State the number of days after release
- Use a representative group of recent episodes
- Separate downloads from followers and social reach
Show the revenue equation
A basic gross scenario is downloads divided by 1,000, multiplied by CPM, sold slots, episodes, and sell-through. Each variable should be editable and visible.
- Use a range instead of one promised result
- Account for unsold inventory
- Separate agency, network, production, and payment costs
Make the pitch about fit
Smaller shows can be valuable when the audience is specific and the activation is credible. Support the proposal with listener evidence, relevant case studies, and a test package.
- Do not fabricate demographics
- Explain how results will be measured
- Disclose sponsor relationships clearly
