What is Condenser Microphone?

A condenser microphone is a sensitive type of mic that captures high-frequency detail and nuance. It is ideal for studio environments but requires a quiet room.

Why Condenser Microphone Matters for Podcasters

Condenser microphones function using an electrically charged plate (capacitor) to capture sound. Because the internal mechanism is very lightweight, it can move quickly, capturing very high frequencies and subtle nuances of the human voice that other mics might miss. This gives them a 'crisp' and 'expensive' sound. However, this sensitivity is a double-edged sword: condensers will also pick up mouth clicks, lip smacks, and the sound of a car driving by three streets away. They require 'Phantom Power' (48v) to operate. They are generally recommended for sound-treated studios, whereas Dynamic mics are better for home setups with background noise.
