What is Plosives?

Plosives are the loud, popping sounds caused by a blast of air hitting the microphone capsule, typically occurring when speaking words starting with 'P' or 'B'.

Why Plosives Matters for Podcasters

Plosives are one of the most common signs of amateur audio. When you say words like 'Podcast' or 'Boom,' your mouth expels a fast burst of air. If the microphone is directly in front of your mouth, this air blast hits the diaphragm like a hammer, causing a low-frequency 'thump' or distortion. This is physically unpleasant to listen to on subwoofers or good headphones. The best way to fix plosives is prevention: using a 'Pop Filter' and positioning the microphone slightly off-axis (to the side of the mouth) so the air blast goes past the mic rather than into it.
