What is Pop Filter?

A pop filter is a screen (usually mesh or metal) placed between the speaker's mouth and the microphone to disperse air blasts and prevent plosive sounds.

Why Pop Filter Matters for Podcasters

A pop filter is the cheapest way to instantly improve audio quality. It acts as a shield. When a speaker says a 'P' or 'B' sound, the mesh breaks up the concentrated jet of air, dispersing it so it hits the microphone gently. There are two main types: nylon mesh (cheaper, but can dampen high frequencies slightly) and metal mesh (more durable, more transparent sound). Many broadcast microphones (like the Shure SM7B) have a foam 'windscreen' built-in, but an external pop filter is still recommended for hosts who speak close to the mic.
