What is Chapters / Markers?

Podcast chapters are metadata markers embedded in an audio file that allow listeners to jump to specific sections of an episode, often accompanied by specific images or links.

Why Chapters / Markers Matters for Podcasters

Chapters improve the user experience (UX) of a podcast significantly. Just like chapters in a DVD or a book, they allow the listener to navigate the content easily. If an episode covers three different news stories, chapters allow a listener to skip a story they aren't interested in without guessing where the next one begins. Chapters are embedded into the MP3 or AAC file using ID3 tags. Modern podcast apps (like Overcast, Pocket Casts, and Apple Podcasts) support chapters and can even display different artwork or clickable links for each chapter. This is particularly useful for long-form interviews or variety shows.
